Pop Up Penguins presents a unique opportunity for us to engage with our audience away from the dealership. It is a way for us to express our thoughts and interests away from cars, parts, and servicing. We’ve commissioned a very talented young Christchurch artist to produce a piece we’re confident will turn heads. McChesney Kelly’s Penguin Disguised as a Tui appealed to us as we likened the return of Tuis to the Port Hills to the return of New Zealanders to Christchurch – post-quake and post-COVID-19 – bringing with them new life and skills to assist in growing our community. A cause that’s long been close to our heart.

As Tui’s have recently made their way back to Canterbury these last few years, McChesney-Kelly wanted to bring some awareness to them through this design. Some penguins are found around Canterbury, especially Banks Peninsula, which has seen new Tui’s flying around quite a lot as well. The shape of the Penguin sculpture is a great new way of seeing the Tui’s beautiful colours and drawing attention to these two important species in New Zealand. McChesney-Kelly Adams is a multi-disciplinary artist from Christchurch. She is focused on subjects such as life and in most of her works you will see animals, portraits and plants. She is dedicated to her practice of realistic drawing and strives to always work to the highest standard. Her style is a unique blend of realism and confident abstraction with her use of delicate detail. She is fast becoming recognized for her realistic animal drawings and murals.

More about Pop Up Penguins

Wild in Art is bringing a second sculpture trail to Christchurch this summer. In partnership with Presenting Partner, Harcourts and with the support of many other sponsors and funders, Pop Up Penguins will give residents and visitors a fresh opportunity to discover and delight in all that makes Ōtautahi special.

The public art trail will include 50 large penguin sculptures, sponsored by companies and decorated by established and emerging artists, along with up to 65 little penguins, decorated by schools as part of the Pop Up Penguins Learning Programme.

All decorated penguins will be displayed across Christchurch on a public art trail that will celebrate all the unique parts of our city. The penguins will highlight themes like climate change, community, Antarctica, creativity, innovation and exploration.

After 10 weeks, out and about in Christchurch, the street sized penguins will be auctioned to raise money for Cholmondeley Children’s Centre.

Entries close at the end of Pop Up Penguin’s installation period at 11:59pm 31st January 2021. Winner will be notified by email within 5 working days after the promotion period. Prize includes one night’s stay at your choice of two local PurePod locations(Greystone or Port Levy Bay), a full tank of petrol, and a Toyota for the 48-hours. The prize is not transferable, refundable, and cannot be exchanged for cash. ILAM TOYOTA will take all reasonable actions to notify a winner but, if no response is received within 72 hours, ILAM TOYOTA reserves the right to redistribute the prize. The prize winner is required to be over the age of 25 for vehicle insurance reasons. A full New Zealand driver’s license is applicable.
