Pacific Toyota Drives Learning Life Through Sport

What if sport could be more than just competition? What if it wasn’t only about peak conditioning, personal bests, and growing trophy cabinets, but also about teaching values that shape us for life? Shouldn’t sport be fun?

It seemed almost out of place to raise these questions among professional adults, but made for the perfect segue into the inaugural New Zealand presentation of Learning Life Through Sport – an inspiring initiative founded by Rod Campbell and proudly driven by Pacific Toyota.

What is Learning Life Through Sport

Learning Life Through Sport is a programme designed to challenge social norms and inspire young people and their communities to bring a new standard of behaviour and respect to sport – and to life. It’s not about drills or scoreboards, but about culture: the way athletes, coaches, parents, and spectators carry themselves and the values they model.

At its heart, the programme highlights three simple yet powerful principles:

  • Sportsmanship – The spirit in how we connect and compete.
  • Respect – Respect for everyone, on and off the field. Never arguing with umpires’ decisions.
  • Try Your Hardest – Rewarding effort, not outcomes.

These values aren’t just lessons for sport – they’re lessons for life. They create environments where the younger generation can thrive, where effort should be celebrated, and where respect is displayed in every interaction.

These principles are things you’d expect to already be the norm. Yet the videos shared during the presentation told a different story. Seeing examples of sideline behaviour that has sadly become common was shocking. Simple acts, like not shouting at umpires over decisions, or taking a moment to shake their hand and thank them after the game, make a huge difference. They’re behaviours that not only shape our children, but also create a far better environment for those officiating the game – and we need them for sport to survive.

Rod highlighted that umpires, especially teenagers, are leaving sport in big numbers every year. He asked the group, “where else would it be acceptable for an adult to yell abuse at a 14-year-old child?”

We discussed the reality of these events which are taking place right on our doorstep:

Bringing Together the Community

We’re proud to have assisted the presentation along side Pacific Toyota and our Bay of Plenty community partners Whai Basketball and Good Neighbour.

Whai Basketball carried their no-alcohol tradition to the event, providing delicious refreshments. Their stand against New Zealand’s drinking culture in sport has always impressed us – and if you ever get the chance to attend a Whai Basketball game, the vibe is nothing short of electric and positive. The food on the day was provided by our partner Good Neighbour, a true community rock. Through their Food Rescue division, they save 2.5 tonnes of food daily from landfill and redistribute it to frontline community organisations and individuals. Every week, this work positively impacts over 750 Kiwi households and an average of 5,000 people.

Toyota in New Zealand has long championed the idea that our role goes beyond vehicles – and at Pacific Toyota, we’ve always pushed those values to help create stronger, safer, and more connected communities.

What made this presentation even more special was its timing. Held in Tauranga during one of the busiest weeks on the event calendar as the region celebrates our tamariki through sport. With Pacific Toyota also proudly sponsoring AIMS Games, it felt like the whole region was united in recognising the value of sport – not only as a stage for competition, but as a platform for growth and positive change.

Aligning with Miles Group Values

It’s our commitment to this cultural shift that will be shown through our influence in the sporting communities we’re a part of. Whether that’s through sponsorships, local partnerships, or community involvement, our role goes beyond supporting the game – we’re helping shape environments where positive values can thrive.

It’s not just about raising better athletes – it’s about raising better people. When players learn values like respect, teamwork, and perseverance, those lessons ripple outward into families, schools, and communities. When coaches model positive behaviour, they create environments where kids feel safe to grow. And when parents and spectators embrace those same values, sport becomes a platform for lifelong impact.

At Pacific Toyota, and across the Miles Group, we’re proud to stand behind initiatives that bring people together and make a real difference both on and off the field.
