We catch up with ILAM Toyota team member, Ronan Murphy, on his racing accomplishments and ambitions.

We’re proud to share the pursuits of our team, and today we’re highlighting what our New Vehicle Sales Consultant at ILAM Toyota, Ronan Murphy, gets up to in his spare time.

Ronan competes as a successful driver for the Toyota GAZOO Racing series. The son of motorsport legend Greg Murphy, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Not to mention, Ronan’s grandfather led a race team for many years in Australia, probably contributing to the fact that Ronan dreamt about his own successes in motorsport. At age 14, Ronan began racing go-karts, a late age to begin the sport, but through determination and practice, caught on fast to achieve some respectable results in his short go-karting career.

In 2018, Ronan took the leap to cars and entered the Speedsport Formula First Scholarship. He won, and finished 3rd overall on debut in the Manfeild Winter Series. Following that year’s successes, he took 6th overall and won Rookie of the Year in the ’18/’19 NZ Formula First Championship, before making the move to Formula Ford where he finished 3rd in the ’19 Winter Formula Ford Championship, and 5th in the ’19/’20 NZ Formula Ford Championship – even after experiencing some engine issues.

Not one to slow down (literally…), he moved to the US in ’20 to compete in the Formula 4 US Championship, scoring two podium finishes, and returning to New Zealand to compete in the ’20/’21 Best Bars Toyota NZ TR86 Championship, where he scored podium finishes and numerous top 3s in qualifying and top 5s across the Championship.

He’s currently competing in the ’22 Best Bars Toyota NZ 86 Championship and plans to move to Australia to compete in either the Australian Carrera Cup Championship or Super 2 Championship, hoping to fulfill a lifelong dream of competing in the Repco Supercars Championship.

Ronan’s Toyota 86 racecar boasts a six-point FIA-approved roll cage, integrated Motec dash, FIA-approved race seat and Sparco race steering wheel, making it the ideal racing car for Toyota 86 Championship drivers. The vehicle also features specially tuned adjustable suspension, a racing brake package and runs on 18-inch Speedline motorsport wheels fitted with Nexen tyres. Described as a stepping stone to greater things, the Toyota GAZOO Racing New Zealand TR86 Championship is an intensely competitive premier-level championship that attracts rising racers and some of the highest profile names in New Zealand Motorsport, and the ’22 championship is one of the most competitive and talented line ups the category has ever seen.

We are proud to have such inspiring talent amongst our team and we wish Ronan all the best in his racing career!
