Your Hybrid Hilux FAQs answered

Our Miles Toyota team have answered some of the hybrid Hilux FAQs they’ve been receiving from those considering an upgrade – like yourself.

Is the hybrid Hilux available in New Zealand?

Yes, the hybrid Hilux is available in New Zealand. Book a test drive to experience it for yourself.

What type of battery and engine does the hybrid Hilux have?

The hybrid Hilux boasts the same 2.8-litre 500 Nm 150 kW turbo diesel engine, supplemented with a 48-volt lithium-ion battery system and motor generator that provides improved fuel economy and additional torque assist. The battery charges the same as Toyota’s hybrid electric vehicles, which utilise regenerative braking to charge the battery. It does not need to be plugged in.

Can the hybrid Hilux tow?

Absolutely. The 48-volt hybrid system in the 2024 Hilux does not compromise towing capacity or overall performance, maintaining the impressive 3500 kg braked tow rating and 700 mm wading depth. Tow rating is particularly important with the Hilux, given 98% of new ones sold are fitted with one!

Hybrid Hilux fuel economy

The 48-volt hybrid Hilux boasts an improved average fuel economy compared to regular diesel counterparts, with a combined fuel economy of 8.7-litre/100 km (approximately a 7% improvement over the 2023 diesel model). It’s important to note that whilst fuel economy and range figures are tested under controlled conditions, actual results may vary with real-world driving conditions.

What warranty does the hybrid Hilux have?

All new Toyota hybrid vehicles receive an 8-year/160,000 km hybrid battery warranty from the day you drive away. This works in conjunction with the 5-year/150,000 km comprehensive new vehicle warranty.

Do I need to pay additional road user chargers with the hybrid Hilux?

As the hybrid Hilux is a conventional hybrid (and does not require plugging in) it does not incur any additional road user charge fees, other than the standard diesel RUC rate you would pay on a regular diesel Hilux.
