Built to Last, Driven to Serve: The 1990 Hilux with 600,000km

At Miles Toyota, they often talk about reliability, durability, and going the distance. But sometimes, a story comes along that reminds us what those words really mean – and that it’s the people who bring Toyota to life. That’s why when Miles Toyota community member Paul D told us about his story, we felt privileged to share it.

Since 2016, Paul has been making an annual journey to Cambodia that goes far beyond an overseas holiday. Working alongside a local pastor, he’s been part of water engineering projects near the Thai border, bringing clean water to remote villages, schools, and churches.

Their dependable workhorse on these critical missions? A 1990 Hilux with nearly 600,000km on the clock.

“Our Pastor lives in Battambang, and has been driving his 1990 2.0 Ltd diesel Hilux since the late 1990s. It is close to 600,000km, travelling over some of the most demanding tracks you could imagine. There is no suspension, and the front window screen has numerous cracks. She has never let us down.”

The Hilux That Just Keeps Going

Over some of the most demanding terrain imaginable, their Hilux has just kept going. Despite the long-gone suspension and a cracked windscreen, this powertrain continues to perform – carrying equipment and supplies to remote communities that need it.

The pastor who drives this remarkable vehicle has an equally remarkable story. Captured by the Khmer Rouge at 14 and forced to fight, he escaped and later spent ten years in a refugee camp. Offered rehabilitation in Canada or Australia, he chose to stay and help his people recover. Now married with four adult children, he continues this work of restoration.

“Captured by the Khmer Rouge at the age of 14, forced to fight for them, escaped and joined the Govt forces fighting the Khmer Rouge. Lived in a refugee camp for 10 years, and despite being offered rehabilitation in Canada or Australia, he elected to stay and help his people recover.”

Decades Behind the Wheel

Paul’s Toyota journey spans decades, starting with a 1996 Camry that he drove from 26,000 km all the way to 330,000 km. He then took delivery of a 2005 3.0-litre Highlander from the Miles Toyota showroom, which covered an impressive 350,000 km with WaterForce. Today, his wife drives a 2021 RAV4 while Paul is behind the wheel of a Lexus RX, continuing his Toyota spirit.

More Than Just a Car

This story resonates with us because it reflects how these vehicles represent more than just transportation or getting from A to B. Toyota is about the people who bring the brand to life, with vehicles becoming part of powerful stories of service and community.
