An Interview with Shot Put Champion, Tom Walsh

At ILAM Toyota, we take great pride in sponsoring Tom Walsh, a talented shot put athlete and Olympic medallist. Recognized as one of New Zealand’s top athletes, Tom maintains a rigorous training regimen, which is why we’ve been supporting him for the past 9 years by providing him with a brand-new Hilux.

We thought we’d sit down with Tom and pick his brains over some of our mutual interests – shot put, and Hiluxs.

What’s on the Agenda for 2023 (personal or shot put)?

I have the World Athletics Championships in Budapest this August so everything is building towards that. I also have my wedding in October!

How did you get into shot put?

I just did it like everyone else does at school sport days, and I was pretty good so just stuck with it.

What is your ultimate goal?

Win an Olympic gold and finish as the best men’s shot-putter of all time.

What did you want to become when you were a child?

I think like a lot of kids I wanted to become a Black Cap or an All Black, but am happy with my choice of jobs now. If I wasn’t playing sport it was going to be a farmer or a builder.

What two things aside from food and water would you want a deserted island?

A machete to cut down stuff and Spotify so I don’t go completely crazy.

What superpower would you choose for yourself?

Flying.

Favourite feature of your Hilux?

I love that I can just throw all my sports kit, tools, and Rippa (my golden retriever) in the canopy which keeps the cab clean and not smelly, even though Dana may say differently!

Whats your favourite place you’ve been in the Hilux?

Ahuriri Valley down by the Lindis Pass, it’s a pretty special place down there.

Thanks for sharing, Tom!
