Your Guide to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
15 June 2020
We’ve heard a lot about the merits of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto lately, so we decided to dive in deeper and learn more. We learned more about what both systems offer drivers and what Kia vehicles come standard with this connectivity. Join in as we explore what Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have to offer – we think you’ll be pining for a road trip soon!
How does it work?
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allow us to safely access our phone’s features while remaining alert and attentive to the road. How? By projecting our phone’s face onto the digital touchscreen of our vehicles, usually through a USB connection. Introduced in 2014, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have gone over a few refinements that allow them to offer a seamless experience.
To activate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with Android 10, plug your iPhone or Android into your vehicle’s USB cable and your phone will be mirrored on the vehicle’s touchscreen. If you have Android 9 or below, download the Android Auto app on your phone and connect your USB cable to your vehicle.
To keep everything touch-free, simply call out “Hey Siri” to get Apple CarPlay’s attention, or “Hey Google” for Android Auto where Google Assistant is applicable.
Not all the apps on your phone will be available on your vehicle’s touchscreen, however, as only those deemed safe to operate while driving will work. The list is long, though, and includes most everything you need, such as phone, music, maps, messages, podcasts, and audio.
Why do I want Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?
Want to seamlessly switch from your favourite podcast to a playlist you’ve painstakingly curated? No problem. What about queuing up the perfect road trip playlist? Easy, and you don’t even need to take your eyes off the road.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are compatible with many music entertainment apps, making it easy to access albums, songs, podcasts, and more with a simple button click or voice command.
Use your favourite navigation apps with the touch of a button or through voice activation. Simply state your destination or points of interest you’re on the hunt for (petrol stations, cafes) and get moving. Apple CarPlay goes a step above and can predict desired locations based on addresses stored in your email, text messages, contacts, and calendars.
Isn’t it better to have built-in satellite navigation? As clever as the built-in satellite navigation system on your vehicle may be, it’s a tough match against the constantly updated, infinitely customisable smart apps on your phone. This means that although the built-in system initially seems handy, having Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can mean you’re less likely to miss road construction updates, crucial turns, and accurate traffic times.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are like having your own personal assistant in the car with you. Make phone calls, listen to voicemail and text messages aloud, and answer texts through voice command, all while you stay focused on the road ahead.
Driving doesn’t mean you have to be disconnected. Check out your day at a glance via the calendar app and be reminded of meetings, appointments, and more. If you’re on your way to an appointment listed in your calendar, you can tap the event to give you directions to the location, or dial into a phone meeting from the appointment. The future is most certainly here.
